Pilots with Hang 2 type skills can easiliy be converted from scooter towing techniques to plaform tow techniques.
Platform towing starts with the pilot and glider on the back of a truck or trailer platform attached to a line on a payout winch where the line starts out short and gradually gets longer. The pilot is launched off the moving vehicle and climbs as the line is fed out with a hydraulic braking system that is monitored from the vehicle. The line keeps getting longer as the pilot climbs to altitudes between 800 and 1500 feet on the length of runway we have available. The pilot then can release at the end of the tow and continue searching for thermals or just practice turning and landing approaches that are always supervised.
Flights of over 5 hours have been achieved at Blue Sky using this method, as well as 50 mile cross country flights.
